1. Salon 11:11
Salon 11:11 is a private studio suite in Hermosa Beach, and balayage is at the center of what Justice Pallais does there, along with foilyage for anyone who wants more brightness from the same soft placement. The consultation comes first: your starting color, your skin tone and how long you want to go between appointments decide how the color is placed. The aim is color that looks like you in bright light and still grows out gracefully months later.

3. AR Salon
AR Salon, also at the Hermosa Pavilion's Salon Republic, offers balayage and highlights it describes as "a customized hand-painted, sun-kissed color built for beach hair". It says it has operated since 1999.

4. Salon H by Hala
Salon H, in Torrance, titles itself a hair highlights and balayage specialist for Torrance and the South Bay, and lists dimensional color: custom highlights, balayage and blended color. It also offers precision cuts, color correction and special-occasion styling, by appointment only.

5. Palma Hair Salon
Palma, in Rancho Palos Verdes, says it specializes in balayage, blonding, hair color and hair extensions, in a modern salon inspired by the Peninsula's natural hues. It is open on Sundays.

How to spot good balayage
- No visible line at the root, even a couple of months in. That is the point of painting rather than foiling.
- Brightness where light would hit: around the face, through the top layer, heaviest on the ends.
- Soft transitions, with no stripes or blotches where the lightener started and stopped.
- A toner or gloss at the end, so the tone is intentional rather than whatever the lightener left behind.

How long does balayage last?
Because the root is left soft, balayage often goes three to six months between full appointments, with a gloss in between to refresh tone. It varies with how light you go and how much sun and salt your hair gets.
Is balayage good for dark hair?
Yes. On dark hair, balayage usually lifts to caramel or bronde tones rather than bright blonde, which keeps the hair healthier and the grow-out softer.
What is the difference between balayage and foilyage?
Foilyage uses the same freehand painting as balayage, but the painted sections are wrapped in foil to lift brighter. It is a middle ground between soft balayage and traditional highlights.
