Salt water draws moisture out of hair, chlorine strips tone, pool copper turns blonde green and UV oxidizes color. The science is in salt water, sun and blonde hair. This post is the practical side: which products actually help, sorted by when you use them.
No product beats this: wet your hair with clean water before you get in the ocean or the pool. Hair that is already saturated absorbs far less of whatever it is about to sit in.
How we chose
- Currently sold, and checked against the brand's page or a major retailer.
- A clear, brand-stated job: UV protection, pre-swim barrier, chlorine or mineral removal, or repair.
- Enough range that you can build a routine from one step or all four.
Before you swim
Philip Kingsley Swimcap Water Resistant Mask
Applied to damp hair before swimming or sunbathing and left on, Swimcap is designed to create a protective layer against chlorinated and salt water. Its ingredients include castor and olive oils, elastin and UV absorbers, and it is sulfate- and paraben-free. Philip Kingsley says it was originally developed for the US Olympic synchronized swimming team.
Good for: regular swimmers, especially blondes in pools. Bluemercury
Sun Bum Revitalizing 3 in 1 Leave In Conditioner
A light leave-in with argan, watermelon seed and coconut oils, labeled color-friendly and UV-protecting. Sun Bum says it helps control frizz and slow color fading.
Good for: an everyday beach-bag leave-in. Brand page
In the sun
Sun Bum Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30
A broad-spectrum SPF 30 mist, water resistant for 80 minutes, meant to be reapplied after swimming, after towel drying and at least every two hours. Sun Bum's own guidance is that it is mostly for exposed scalp, such as your part, rather than the full lengths.
Good for: protecting the scalp along a part line on long beach days. Brand page
COOLA Scalp & Hair Sunscreen Mist
Another SPF 30 mist for scalp and hair, with cica, monoi oil and panthenol. COOLA says it helps protect hair and scalp from sun exposure and color fading.
Good for: an alternative SPF mist for scalp and hair. Brand page
When you wash
Malibu C Swimmers Wellness Shampoo
A swimmer's shampoo that names its chelating ingredients, disodium EDTA and sodium gluconate, as what helps remove chlorine and pool elements. Malibu C says it helps remove chlorine, copper and minerals and helps prevent green hair, and that the line is safe for color-treated hair.
Good for: anyone in a pool more than once a week. Brand page
OLAPLEX Nº.4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo
A clarifying shampoo OLAPLEX says removes chlorine, heavy metals, hard-water minerals and product buildup without stripping. It is listed as color-safe, and the brand directs weekly use or as needed.
Good for: a weekly reset for lightened hair. Brand page
Color Wow Dream Filter
A pre-shampoo spray applied to dry hair for one to three minutes before you wash, which Color Wow says pulls mineral and chlorine deposits from hard, well and pool water. One important note from the brand: do not use it right after coloring. Wait at least five to seven shampoos.
Good for: dull, heavy-feeling blonde from minerals, once your color has settled. Brand page
Once a week
Sun Bum Revitalizing Hair Mask
A weekly mask with sunflower seed oil and banana, labeled UV-protecting, left on for five to ten minutes. Sun Bum says it restores hydration to dry or over-processed hair.
Good for: a simple weekly treatment in summer. Brand page

A simple beach-season routine
- 1Rinse with clean water before you swim, every time.
- 2A leave-in or pre-swim mask on long beach or pool days.
- 3SPF mist on your part if you are out for hours.
- 4Rinse as soon as you are out, and wash that evening.
- 5A chelating or clarifying shampoo weekly if you swim often.
- 6A mask once a week, and a gloss appointment partway through summer.
For blondes, add the best purple shampoos for blonde hair once or twice a week. And if summer has already done its damage, a gloss is usually the fix: see color and blonding.
Frequently asked questions
Why does blonde hair turn green in pools?
Usually copper in the pool water, not chlorine itself, binding to porous, lightened hair. A chelating shampoo helps remove it, and wetting hair with clean water before swimming helps prevent it.
Is salt water good for hair?
It adds texture, which is why sea salt sprays exist, but it also draws out moisture. For lightened or colored hair, rinsing salt out promptly matters more than any product.
Do I need a hair sunscreen?
If you are outdoors for long stretches, a UV product helps slow color fading and protects an exposed part line. A hat helps more.
